DW has had income of her own (although much less than mine). She is now receiving SS based on that income. I intend to put off receiving SS now, boosting my (future) monthly payments. But, while I'm putting off claiming my own SS, can I get 1/2 of hers? And if I do receive that, will it have any effect on my own latter benefits, when I finally come to apply based on my own income?

Here's an article that explains several strategies to maximize a couple's SS benefits, including your strategy of claiming on her record while waiting to claim on your own record: http://money.usnews.com/money/retirement/articles/2010/04/26...

Yes, under current SS rules, Spouse A (or Ex-Spouse A, under certain circumstances) can claim 50% of Spouse B's benefits without affecting Spouse A's eventual payout based on their own SS record - other than that by waiting to start payments based on their own record, Spouse A can increase their payout.

Also - once you do claim benefits on your record, if 50% of that amount would be more than DW's payout on her record at that time, she should look into claiming on your record, rather than on her own record.

Since rules can change, you probably want to stay alert to SS rule changes and/or check in with the SS Administration periodically.
