Aug 16 issue of Economist, p 54 has first rate article on advances in geothermal. Enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) increase efficiency by 38%. Essentially they are using fracking technology in hot rock zones to fracture rocks and improve heat transfer. The new method has postential to increase geothermal production at a cost of 2-5 c/kwhr vs 6-7 for low cost natural gas.

But failed wells are uneconomical to treat.

Alta Rock Energy, a start up funded by Khosla Ventures, is setting up to exploit the technology. They claim 6 to 10 times more power than from traditional geothermal fields.
