I, perhaps like you, have such a hard time with this - the idea of accepting blindly the rote "writings")passed down orally through generations - and believing that a deity - God/or whomever/whatever actually wrote or decreed these)without questioning the reasons for doing what one is doing or is advised to do....perhaps because I don't have a belief system of my own - "Jewish Atheist" here....

I can't get my head around it - there are many here on this Board and many in our lives who have been and are good to me, are good people yet who truly believe - that's the issue with me, where does logic end and belief begin? Or does logic really enter into it? I don't want a flame war here, there are many here who do so truly believe, and I respect that but, clearly, I just don't comprehend...

I think mystical/religious beliefs are introduced to us as children, and they are very hard to overturn because of that. Even if you grow in a non-religious family you constantly hear about god this and god that. As a child you learn from everyone in your environment, and if so many people talk about god there must be some grain of truth.

I was an agnostic for a long time, not believing but finding it hard to disbelieve there is a god. I finally turned the corner and became a complete atheist. It's a very liberating change.

Like you, I'm a Jewish atheist. Culturally and ethnically I'm Jewish. I respect my ancestors who were religious people. But anything that touches on religion causes me to cringe. It's such a waste of time and energy. It leads people to such bizarre and even offensive behaviors that it all really turns me off.
