Elan makes some very good points. As matters stand, there's already been quite a bit o' pushing and shoving re: territorial boundaries, maritime laws and jurisdictions...all as a consequence of sundry nations poising to capitalize on what they see as a bounty of mineral and oil resources made available in an ice-free Arctic. The US has been in the thick of it. The Arctic Ocean is growing (as the ice cap is shrinking) as a region posing new geopolitical risks.
