Emotional impact aside - if you can cut financial ties smoothly and cleanly, do it now. Quickly.

I'm not really expecting great advice from anonymous internet folks... just looking to spill my guts to some anonymous and potentially bored forum readers who might have some tips for me

The best tip: clean break. No "let's try to be friends", no "one last time"s, etc. It's kinder to your own heart in the long run.
