WPS Resources is investing up to $10 million in a new venture to turn residue from coal mining into "energy briquettes" to be burned by utilities and factories to generate power.
The deal is the latest example of diversification efforts at WPS.

Production of the briquettes started late last month at a coal mine near Birmingham,Ala.

AT full capacity, the facility will produce 400,000 tons of coal "fines" annually.

WPS Has a joint venture with Green Bay Packaging for a power plant in Morilton,Ark.
