Ester had great advice...consider it an investment, and be thankful that he thinks enough of you to spend his beer money on jewelry for you. ;)

I had the same agonizing thoughts before I went out and bought my fiance her gift from me for our upcoming wedding (30 days and ticking...). I bought her a really nice necklace, and having it put in a really nice heart-shaped wooden box for presentation. It cost a LOT of money, but since this is the only wedding gift she'll ever get from me (excluding any renewing of vows down the road), the occasion warrants the price.
