Say you have a stock that announces a cash dividend to shareholders on record as of 4-30-01, and will make the dividend on 5-4-01. Must you buy the stock earlier than 4-30-01 to be registered and on record to get the dividend? In other words, do you have to buy on 4-26-01 to let the clearing house register you as a shareholder or could you wait until the actual ex-dividend date?
