Except for the 15% of my total holdings that are MFI picks (Magic Formula Investing), all but one my stocks pays a dividend.

Several of the MFI picks also pay a dividend and of those a few may get held beyond the 12 month window because of their dividends.

Cliff or no cliff, reliable dividend paying stocks allow me to sleep at night and through some nasty downturns. My goal is a reliable growing income stream in later years. It's eased my mind considerably to change my expectation from selling off cap gain stocks in retirement to just monitoring portfolio for dividend reliability and dividend growth (and the occasional overextended dividend stock needing rolled out of via a covered call).
