Excessive sugar consumption substantially increases health care costs. If government is going to use tax dollars to bear a big portion of these health care costs, then government has a responsibility to tax payers to do what it can to keep those costs down.

Given scientific studies showing that increasing the cost of junk foods results in an increase in the purchase of vegetables, a food sin tax seems like it would be pretty effective.

Would you put a sin tax on dried dates? How about a russet potato? I suggest looking up their glycemic index and loading before responding.
