What's the view regarding extended warranties? Should I spring for one or not?

We just replaced an ancient Land Cruiser with an '02 5-spd Pathfinder (we have a landscape design biz). Because the reliability on the Pathfinder is top-rated by Consumer Reports, I decided not to buy the extended warranty at time-of-purchase. Now a couple of buddies more knowledgeable than I have suggested pretty strongly that the extended warranty might be a good idea. They point out that all the new computer stuff makes for expensive repairs, among other things. The old LC was vastly simpler (and cheaper) to keep running.

So, is my circa late-80s mechanical points, two-barrel carb point of reference sadly out of date? TIA...
