Fairbanks doe have a university with a good engineering school. It a good size town out in the middle of nowhere. It takes a long time to drive to anywhere and the only other real option is flying (Fairbanks is the big city in the area). Be prepared for sub-zero days during the winter and plugging in your car when it's not running. You might even need to keep your car running when it's parked on some days, if you can't plug it in. The winters will be a polar opposite of your summers in Texas.

While I've never lived in Fairbanks, I have visited the city several times. I like the surrounding area and have enjoyed my trips there. The only thing I don't like is that it's not near an ocean. The other thing to be aware of is the cost of living is much higher in Alaska.
