Just finished our federal income tax return for 2013. Will review tomorrow morning with husband to make sure there are no glaring errors. Only 6 forms/schedules this year--smallest in several years.

Got to wondering.... How many Senators and Representatives do you suppose do their own tax returns? How much do you think the tax code would change if they started doing their own tax returns?

Dreaming. I would not insist they do their own income taxes, because they would find a way to not do it. I would settle for their being forced to actually read the entire internal revenue code that they pass every time it is changed, and pass a test on it.

My hope is they get the entire internal revenue code down from 24 megabytes to 24 pages.

I'm not sure even that would solve everything. Congress always finds a way to create havoc even in simple situations. See, for instance, the very first US income tax return (1864), www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040--1864.pdf, especially the fourth paragraph of the instructions.
