That in-wheel electric drive that Rob was talking about is already in a Ford Fiesta concept vehicle.

The two rear wheels house motors. Ford states that in-wheel drive creates a lot of space, removing the engine compartment. The envisioned target is urban, where range and handling considerations would be minimized. They also highlight the flexibility of the drivetrain. The wheels can be conceivably be configured to pivot 90 degrees, so that the car can slip sideways in and our of parking spaces. Or so the article says...
