There are not many crimes that reach me personally anymore. But the murder of three collge-bound inner-city kids in Newark got to me. I'm praying the last of the four friends survives.

NEWARK (AP) — A teenager boy and a man faced murder charges Thursday in the killings of three college students and wounding of another in a schoolyard, a crime considered jarring even in a city used to violence.
The 15-year-old was arrested Wednesday night, and the 28-year-old surrendered Thursday, with his lawyer, directly to Mayor Cory Booker after a news conference, the mayor said.

When reached by the lawyer, "I said simply, let's find a spot," Booker said at a second news conference on Thursday. The surrender took place at a police office next to City Hall.

When the suspect, identified as Jose Carranza, surrendered, "He said no words whatsoever," Booker said. In turn, "I had absolutely nothing to say to this individual."

I hope this adult never leaves prison again (assuming he is guilty). I'm conflicted about the 15 yo.

But there is a larger lesson here. Don't let a man with a gun have his way with you. Do not follow instructions. Fight back.

I said this at the time of Virginia Tech tragedy: these kids should have rushed the shooter. Better to die fighting than die kneeling.

I had a talk with a Virginia state officer at a party on Sunday who was dispatched to VT and his view was identical to mine. Don't curl up and wait to be shot. Grap a chair and rush the shooter.

Perhaps we could adopt the phrase "Let's Roll" as an agreed on signal for joint action. One person yells "Let's Roll," and everyone, EVERYONE, attacks the gunman.

Fight back!
