A consumer credit counseling service might have options, negotiate with your creditors and work up a plan that keeps both you and the creditors happy. I was in a similar fix and banks usually turn a deaf ear, the thinking being they have heard every excuse in the book when it comes to not paying a debt. Oftentimes the simple and truthful fact of NOT HAVING IT to pay goes unnoticed.
