First, go through the DVD player manual and see if there is an option to turn the progressive scan on. (My DVD player has a button on the outside.) When you try to turn it on it might ask you to be sure you are using component outputs and a compatible TV. You are, so you can go right ahead and turn it on.

If you are getting progressive scan, you should see 480p instead of 480i. On a 50 inch screen you should be able to notice an improvement with 480p.

Once you make sure you have progressive scan turned on you can keep it that way.
