First, I am not an expert on these things.

1) Your local Library should have mornigstar, it will probably clear things up.

2) Many Closed - end funds are permitted to use leverage (borrow money) which exagerates returns and losses.

3) If you want yield check out mortgage reit's (AHR -for example)

4) what is a fund failure? I do not believe a brand name fund would permit a scandal. Van de kampen would not simply disappear with your money. I have heard of scams involving closed end funds, but the scam required the fund trade at a very large discount.

5) Taking advantage of intest rate movements with CE funds may be difficult due to the premiums/discounts.
