First run CCleaner to make sure your memory is not filled with temp files.

Second review all the programs running on your machine and see which are no longer used. On Windows, CTL ALT Delete gives you a list of what is running. Many autoload at startup. Shut them down temporarily (or search on Google) to be sure they are not essential. Then adjust your autoload list to eliminate the superfluous ones.

Consider adding more memory if you have not already maxed it. CPU spends time moving stuff around if memory is not plentiful.

Also consider defragging your hard drive if you have not done so recently.
