There is promising work on a universal flu vaccine. If successful it could make annual shots unnecessary, though it's not yet clear how long the immunity would last.

I only occasionally get a flu shot. It mutates so fast that often they will quote a pretty low reliability rating, so why bother? Though I do sometimes anyway if they say we're looking at a nasty year (swine flu, etc). But I would be happy to get a one-time vaccination against this. I still think it has the potential to be the next pandemic, as it was in the 19-teens.
