I would much rather have a waitress do too many "checkbacks" than wait for me to flag him/her down.

No, you misunderstand me. Flagging a waitress down is still using the "polling" method (the waitress has to keep checking over and over to see if you're flagging yet). The "interrupt-driven" method would be like you push a button and the waitress is instantly alerted without her having to do any periodic checking. Like . . .

"Hi, I'm Tammy and I'll be your waitperson this evening. Here's a card with my beeper number. If you need anything, just call my beeper with your cell phone, and punch in your table number [Tammy points to your table number on the card]. Can I bring you an exotic drink or our appetizer sampler, both of which have unusually high markups today?"
