For end of semester tickets for my kids, I usually used mileage tickets because(at least at that time) the dates & times could be changed as long as the routings were the same. They all seemed to have exam timse that were changed or not used which changed when they wanted to head home.

For the ones in places with small airports, I grabbed seats as early as I could because there was almost always limited availability.

I also used to take bumps for vouchers when I could to increase the possibilities. I don't do that much anymore.
