For example, if you're really good you don't want to (and shouldn't have to) wait 5 years just to make a promotion from regular-whatever to senior-whatever... While you may not be doing the work you like or advancing as you'd like there sometimes is much merit in just being able to hold your ground in an overall bad economy.

11 years with the same company and only lateral movements, no vertical promotion. That is not to say there were not compensation increases, but responsibility has actually decreased even as recognition of abilities has become more widespread. Go figure.
