For midwest kids, that probably means they must leave the area, must attend the best schools in the country, probably Ivy league universities, and must seek advanced degrees from the best schools and best known professors. Otherwise, job prospects are bleak.

I wouldn't expect that there are all that many Marine Biologists coming out of the Ivy League. The best schools for Marine Biology are the ones that offer hands on training and you would probably find them along the coast. Texas A&M has a branch of the university situated in Galveston, TX just for Marine majors (Biology, Oceanography, etc) Their grads hire rate is pretty good. There are some good programs in FL as well.

Same with the vet school, which ranks as one of the top in the country. If you can make the cut to get in, the job market isn't bad.

However, you do make an excellent point about kids in the Midwest. They need to be willing to move to where the jobs are, and that can be tough.

As was pointed out earlier in the thread, Baby Boomers are starting to retire, and this will slowly begin to free up more job availability. And as you say, it's important to do some research before choosing a career.

A hint for all those "Business Administration" majors: Not everyone can become president or CEO of a major corporation.
