For next year, if I had $10,000 in short term capital gains, would I be able to subtract the $7,000 from the previous year or would I still be limited to $3,000?The $3,000 limitation does NOT apply to offsetting capital gains with capital losses. It only applies to offseting ordinary income (salary). So for the next year you would report a $3,000 short term capital gain (10,000 - 7,000).
