Frequent flier miles typically aren't difficult to use for, well, frequent fliers. For people who take maybe one big trip a year to a specific place around a specific time, it can be hard to redeem. I take more trips than I have miles so it's typically not difficult to use my miles in general. For any given trip, I make the most cost-effective choice on whether to 'pay' with miles, credit card points, cash or some combination of the three.

I haven't had any problems but I also have more choices because of status. Also because of current status, I am likely to buy a ticket and maybe use miles to upgrade. My son has definitely benefited from both my status and my miles and has a happy birthday trip to Europe in Sept.
