from Encarta on the Web:

ma·ven [máyvn ] (plural ma·vens) or ma·vin [máyvn ] (plural ma·vins) noun
expert or enthusiast: somebody who is an expert or knowledgeable enthusiast in a particular field

[Mid-20th century. Via Yiddish meyvn from Hebrew mn , literally "somebody who understands."]

Didn't know there was a preferred gender for this person? I've actually used the term (maven)against Maven a few games; usually he (oops! "she") replies with a little-known 3 or 4 letter word I've never heard of but usually means "so what" or something like that! Guess she has a sense of humor!
