Stock Certificates that I hold in my name?

First of all, this is my first post to this board and thank you so much for anyone who can shed light on this for me. My usual sources (my discount broker, Fool School and even the IRS Site) have come up completely empty.

I had an INTC DRIP for about 2 years. They recently added fees that become a large percentage of my paltry monthly investment. I have stopped participation and had the certificates issued to me. I now hold these and would like to use them to start a Roth IRA for myself. It seems that this should be easy. After all, the stock was purchased with after-tax dollars originally. There are a few key points of data or potential issues, listed below.

1. The certificates are held in Joint Tenancy w/ my wife.
2. We are trying to open up a Roth just for me...hers is already funded
3. The current value of the shares is below the annual contribution limit.
4. I'm getting frustrated! (while not a financial issue, an issue nonetheless)

Again, any assistance is greatly appreciated. Even if it's a referral to a great resource...I don't mind the learning aspect as long as I can get to the heart of the question.

Thanks again everyone!
