Represents First Lignite Application

* Monday December 29, 2008, 7:00 am EST

WARRENVILLE, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Fuel Tech, Inc. (NASDAQ: FTEK - News), a world leader in advanced engineering solutions for the optimization of combustion systems in utility and industrial applications, today announced a FUEL CHEM® demonstration order from a new domestic electric utility customer. Utilizing the Company’s proprietary TIFI™ Targeted In-Furnace Injection™ technology, the demonstration will be conducted on a large lignite-fueled generating unit, with chemical feed scheduled to commence early in 2009. Lignite is the lowest-rank coal based on heating value and, in the United States, is located principally in Montana, Texas and North Dakota.

John F. Norris Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer, commented, “For some time now, lignite has represented an attractive target market for our slag-inhibiting TIFI technology, so we are delighted to be conducting our first demonstration on this important fuel source. With about 40 lignite-based units currently operating in North America, we view this announcement as a key step in the development of a new FUEL CHEM market. Equally important, this project validates the flexibility of our technical approach in treating a wide variety of fuel types and combustion units, further establishing Fuel Tech as a leading solution provider to the electric utility industry.”

Mr. Norris concluded, “This announcement brings to 15 the number of FUEL CHEM purchase orders secured this year, including 13 on coal-fired units, both representing record achievements.”
