There are a few paragraphs in the book Alcholics Anonymous beginning at the bottom of page 33 in Chapter 3 "More about Alcoholism" that may shed some light on this question.

"To be gravely affected, one does not necessarily have to drink a long time nor take the quantities some of us have."

You may want to pick up this book and give it a read. If you have questions about ideas presented, there is probably an "open" AA meeting near you where you could get those questions answered.
