I went to Washington DC to protest the vietnam War in 1969 (or maybe 1970). I decided to speak with my Senator, Jacob Javits of NY, and while walking the Senate halls, I ran face-to-face into McGovern, Eugene McCarthy, and Ted Kennedy walking together towards me. They all nodded and smiled at me, but the warmth of McGovern's smile and presence was such that I nearly fainted. It gave me strength to address Senator Javits in front of a large room packed with people.
