George,
Perhaps it would be interesting to get the thoughts of military members with daughters in the military. (My sister is a Marine Officer).

My father was in the Air Force, and I continually have to remind him that I broke the family tradition by joining the military. As a Navy Officer, I had occasion to serve with the Marines for almost half my career, mostly in airborne units. When asked why we jumped out of perfectly good airplanes, we would respond with one or more of the following:

A plane in the sky is a crash waiting to happen - get out while the getting's good (paraphrasing from the joke about submarines already being half sunk, they're already under water)

Who would you rather have controlling your descent to the ground, a pilot with a call sign like Psycho, Brain Dead, or Gopher, or yourself?

We prefer taking the scenic route.

All in good fun,

Tom
