"The Girl with the Digital Camera" Ad that sponsored the Fool this morning (perhaps for the day) seemed out of place here on the Fool. I wouldn't go as far as one message on the boards which called it "perverted". For me, it just seemed odd and kind of weird for an ad on the Fool to appear "sexually suggestive" in any way.

So you missed the Viagra ads ?

Hi Fools,

I completely agree with you that the ad is inappropriate. The advertiser is serving their ads on their own server, and thus has the ability to change the ads at will (rather than sending them through us for approval). The original ad we had did not look like this one. We are yanking this ad until the advertiser sends us something more appropriate for our Foolish audience.

Thanks for keeping an eye on us! We appreciate the feedback--keep it coming!

Please let me register an opposite opinion. I guess sexual suggestion is in the eye of the beholder, because I can't find anything suggestive at all in this ad. It's a girl, it's a camera, the two are together. So?

I do hope TMF realizes how close this decision is to WalMart's silly policies. The Motley Fool website seems to become more conservative with each passing week. That is a bad trend.

Was that the ad? I've seen it I don't know how many times and thought nothing of it. It's a girl holding a camera in front of a red background with some flashing stuff. Is that it?

Some teenage boys can find titillation in a photo of a grapefruit but I don't think pulling grapefruit ads will solve anything.

Then again maybe I'm just getting old.

Rick... o Rick... my friend...
first off: that was Not a "girl", it was a Woman
and, IIRC, she was smiling.... suggestively!
(everyone knows women only smile when they want... you-know-what --they want you to take naughty pictures and post them on the Web)

o Rick... you've been around long enough to know that TMF probably thinks Walmart (albeit perhaps a good investment) is a hotbed of vulgarity... (they sell women's underwear (i think), they probably have dressing rooms, they may even have female camera salespeople.. who smile)

...TMF only seems more conservative...

i think it's become so absurd it's hilarious. no?

Hi all,

I seem to recall seeing a thread like this elsewhere on the web (not on Fool.com) about this ad. There actually was a response from the company running the ads that basically said this is what sells. They have tried other types of ads, but this type of ad is the one that generates the greatest response. They'd be foolish as a company to run anything else.

Hey, the (Fool) clown picture is offensive to me. Remove it too because it has a sexually nature in my opinion. See, it doesn't show the clown's body, so how do I know that the clown is dressed at all? I AM VERY OFFENDED!!!! I thought this was a respectful site!!!!

If you guys are going to cater to every narrow-minded idiot that stumbles across your site, you'll someday have nothing but a blank screen to offer. I'll be the first one to log out then.

Why don,t we post her on the fool,s website. I think it might help us think better. Maybe it will put us into photographic memory mode??

Which makes me think-

Hey, one of those Web Cam things with the camera on top of TMFLou2's monitor would be great and really up the page views. Maybe a chat window and little live update window. Ooooo, wait. I gotta go now.

Hi Fools,

Wow! I didn't look at this thread for a few days, and boy has it grown! Just wanted to provide some information on this issue for you. I speak particularly to the posts that brought up the censorship issue. Part of my job at the Fool is to listen to the users, and make sure that the advertising we accept is of the highest quality. We try to be sensitive to the views of our community, including views that take issue with certain ad content. If I hear from enough folks who are unhappy with an ad that we show, I try to take action. In this particular case, we heard complaints from Fools in the community, and Fools who work at HQ. Therefore, we felt it was appropriate to ask the advertiser for some new creative pieces.

I certainly don't want our users to think we are Big Brother censors who act rashly. However, we also want our community to know that we listen to them, and care about their opinions. And, we want to make sure that the site is a place for everyone to visit--from age 4 to 140. :-)

So, keep your views coming. I promise I'll take them under advisement, and act only on those ads that I feel really require some changing.

Thanks!
Karen

Hmmm.... if TMF is already blank and you are still here, wouldn't that make you pretty much the last one to log out?

Pardon my thickness in the event that this was already meant as a joke.

To the moon,
Ralph

I would very much like to have an intelligent opinion on this subject, but I did not see the ad when it was on TMF.

Could someone tell me which camera company the ad was for so I can go to their site and perhaps get, uhm, the full picture?

I'm sure this information would be of interest to other fools who fall into this thread.

To the moon,
Ralph
