Golf,
I use TurboTax for my taxes. I suggest you get a copy and run a few imaginary situations. I was able to determine the best mix for reporting scholarships and expenses by running test cases for myself and for each kid. This is especially useful when adding-in wages and such from summer jobs.

Also, I think the University of California has some excellent engineering schools, especially Santa Barbara and Irvine, and they're not too expensive.
