I met with the current Committee Chair/Cubmaster and the Charter Org representative (the senior pastor for the Methodist Church) last night. It was a good meeting. We spent most of it talking about the history of the relationship between the pack and the church, the pack and the Boy Scout troop also associated with the church (which has been going for 95 years now, one of the oldest continuously running troops in the country!) and stuff like that.

The reason the pack is affiliated with the church (and why it has a different number than the troop it's affiliated with) is a bit of a typical Ann Arbor story. Our pack used to be chartered by the school's PTO (of which my wife is currently a major contributer). However when the BSA banned homosexuals from leadership positions the PTO decided that violated their non-discrimination bylaws and revoked the charter. This happened to many packs apparently. The guy who recruited me was the Committee Chair at that time, had gone through Scouts and was an alum of the troop affiliated with the Methodist church. Since he already had a relationship with the church (he had held leadership positions in that Troop, including Scoutmaster) he asked them to charter the pack and they did.

My religion never came up, which is probably just as well (as it's muddled, lol!) We may actually check out this church. There is a Saturday evening service at the satellite building where we had our meeting, that would work far better than Sunday mornings for me (or any morning, I'm NOT a morning person!)

Anyway, I probably won't offically become the Committee Chair until after the recharter in February (just a paperwork thing). Then we need to find a way to get more parents to step up for all the myraid small tasks that aren't bad by themselves but can become a headache if one person has to do all of them (setting up outings, etc.). I'll learn the ropes of Committee Chair from a guy who has done it for decades and hopefully will have more committee members on board in the near future.
