Ericsson is off to a good start in 2001. Today they announced that the Portuguese operator Optimus selected Ericsson as the key supplier of 3G infrastructure for the southern part of of Portugal. About a week ago the other Portuguese operator TMN also picked Ericsson.

There seems a lot of politics (strategy) involved in choosing suppliers.
The last 2 press releases show that.
Ericy delivers to TMN in the northern part of Portugal
and Optimus in the South.

Birdie,
like not wanting to be dependent on one supplier for reasons of pricing and delivery precision.
Like one can't for whatever reason not deliver the node in time you get it from the second supplier.
Some operators ask for preferential treatment, like the best support (local support as opposed to remote).
For the portugese contracts it seems that the operators stick to the same split of vendors as with GSM.

I forgot to use the word exclusive in my previous post, referring to the demand of operators that if you deliver to us, your not allowed to deliver to our competitor.
