Hi all - As someone who hates to budget, I wanted to pass along a tip. I just started using Mint.com and it's the greatest. And free. You connect your bank accounts, 401(k), mortgage account, brokerage account etcetera to it just by entering the account numbers and passwords. Mint collects all the information and lets you see everything at one glance as soon as you log in! You can call up a list of ALL your transactions (whether ATM, credit card, check, debit card, automatic electronic deductions) and categorize them (groceries, auto, vacation, mortgage, etc) using Mint's suggested categories or ones you add yourself. Soon Mint starts recognizing the transactions and assigning them automatically to your categories. Then you can set yourself a budget for the different categories. You can also view your spending trends and compare your spending to others in your city or state. Mint sends you email reminders like when your next credit card payment is due. AND Mint offers you suggestions on how to save money, like a lower rate credit card or CDs. Mint makes personal finance, dare I say it, fun. I know I sound like a paid shill but really I'm just another Fool. And Mint is truly Foolish. Hope this is helpful. EG
