In my view an easier and faster option is remove and re-install AVG. Clearly something is wrong and while the suggestion may solve the problem, it may not. Additionally other issues may exist.

AFAK, all AV programs have two removal methods. You want the one for use in those circumstances where Windows Add/Remove programs does not work.

You want to download the AVG removal tool. This is a script that goes to the location of all the AVG installed components and deletes them individually.

Once you run the downloaded program, download a fresh copy of AVG and re-install it.

All that said, I prefer and recommend MSE. It works just fine and since it is produced by MSFT, in my estimation it is less likely to have issues with the OS.
