Great post Patzer. I did not have time to go into detail about the process I went through, but it took me about 6 months as well. The key is being sure that all the little things that only happen quarterly or semi-annually are taken care of...

Bottom line: My advice is to ignore the calendar, and leave the old account open however long it takes you to be sure you have everything you need set up and working on the new account. Once you're sure the new account is totally functional, and all the expected payments and deposits have cleared the old account, the old account can be history.

IMO, this point alone deserves tons of recs. The worst thing you can do is to rush the process. Take your time and be certain you have all the bases covered.
