Stop me if I'm wrong, but.... It would seem to me that if you are one who converted in 1998 and used the four tax-year averaging of income available only in that year for tax purposes, then you can tell for yourself whether you have gained financially. Any scenario I might construct is meaningless unless it precisely mirrors your situation, a highly unlikely event.
