Greetings, Samuelito, and welcome.

<<My 401k has no matching employer contribution, no brokerage account option, but it does have an S&P 500 index fund. My problem is with the fees, $60/year. Is this excessive? How can I find descriptive statistics on the universe of 401k fees so that I may effectively lobby my employer for a better deal?>>

If that's a flat fee with no other expenses, then the "reasonableness" of the $60 depends on the value of the account. If other admin fees and/or loads are layered on top of that, then yes it sounds unreasonable.

There is no central place you can turn to for a comparison of 401k fees. It's something the Department of Labor is investigating right now because of employers who tolerate the literal gouging of their employees' accounts by greedy 401k provideers.

The best you can do is for you and others to complain to your employer -- long and loud. That's the only way your firm will listen and perhaps do some cost comparisons with other providers.

Regards....Pixy
