Greetings, Sunirse686, and welcome. You asked:

Is it possible to buy land to be held in a retirement portfolio?

Holding real estate within an IRA is possible. What's difficult is finding a custodian who is willing to administer the IRA. Not many IRA providers will agree to do so due to the complications of making necessary payments for that real estate from IRA assets/contriubitions and in establishing a year-end value of the IRA as required by law. Also, you can expect the fee for doing so will be high in comparison to other alternatives. For a good discussion on the topic, see http://www.creonline.com/art-107.htm .

Regards..Pixy
