My neighbor gave me some good advice when my husband died and I came into $600,000. She said "Don't panic, put the money in money market until you can marshall your thoughts and find out what you had to do." Suzy Orman said, "Pay off your mortgage." I did that. I paid all the debts. Then I checked the investments that my bank had in portfolio funds. I put some of the money in stocks of companies such as GE, Time Warner, Pfizer, Disney, Microsoft and Amazon on my own. The rest went to pay for my grandchildren and daughter's schooling and into the money market. Well, two days after I invested in good American companies, 9-11 happend. What can I say? Life happens! It has taken 5 years for me to recoup. Still TW, GE and Pfizer are lagging behind. To consider these big companies as losers is ridiculous. I am holding on. You don't have a loss until you sell.
