What is the difference between ordinary and gross dividends?
What is the difference between ordinary and gross dividends? I'm not sure of the context in which you are asking. So maybe you could provide a little more info. My best guess is that you are looking at dividends from a mutual fund. Then ordinary dividends are ordinary income, while gross dividends are all dividends received, including long and short term capital gain dividends.--Peter
Yes, I am looking at it from a mutual fund standpoint. Am determined to fully understand this mess before April. When I'm figuring up the cost basis, do I add in only the ordinary gains? Why should I care about gross dividends?
When I'm figuring up the cost basis, do I add in only the ordinary gains?Don't try to make it too difficult. Your cost basis in the mutual fund is simply your purchases, plus any dividends that were reinvested. It doesn't matter whether the dividends were ordinary income or capital gains.--Peter
