It should be noted for completeness, though, that the pair patched things up some time after Jefferson's presidency ended in 1809 and began writing many latters to each other.

And John Adams' last words were allegedly, "Thomas Jefferson lives" -- not knowing his old friend died a few hours earlier on the 50th anniversary of the signing of the declaration.

Back then, even old partisan foes could patch things up. It feels like we're too far gone for that today.
