I've just gotten used to platforms where built-in spam isn't tolerated. Apple's stock tool is powered by Yahoo finance and you don't even see the Yahoo logo unless you are setting the stock ticker. If you click on stock symbol you go to Yahoo finance... it's a tie in, but makes sense.

The weather and other built in tools are similarly powered by yahoo or in some cases Google. There are tie ins, but no overt advertisements.

If Microsoft was going for the budget consumer, your comparison might make sense. They are pricing their products at premium prices like they want to compete on another level. Pushing out adverts contradicts that.
