I don't have anything bad to say about Cisco - they're clearly very good at what they do, and deservedly market leaders.

But don't overestimate the importance of their educational involvement. In the 80s, Apple had much the same lock on college campuses, having given away or sold at cost whole computer labs, under the theory that a person trained on an Apple product would be an Apple person all their lives. You can see how well (not) that it worked for them.
