Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical
organization seeking to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness
from the world, by providing safe, decent, affordable shelter.
Habitat invites volunteers of all backgrounds to build houses,
under trained supervision, in partnership with low-income families
in need. The Habitat houses are then sold to the partner families
at cost and financed with affordable no-interest loans. The cost
of houses varies from as little as $800 in some developing countries
to an average of $46,600 in the United States.
Homeowners are chosen based on their need, their ability to repay
the loan, and their willingness to work in partnership with Habitat.
The homeowners' monthly mortgage payments are used to build still
more Habitat houses.
A worldwide organization with more than 1900 active affiliates in
79 countries, Habitat has built more than 100,000 houses, including
some 30,000 houses across the United States. 17,208 Habitat houses
were built during 2000.

Habitat for Humanity International financial reports show that it
spends about 25 percent of funds on administration and fund raising.
Approximately 75 percent of its expenditures go directly to program
