half the states didn't even have income taxes back in the 50s...or sales taxes...


and when they did, they were low.

IL didn't have an income tax in the 70s...I don't think......they put one in at like 1 1/4 percent and it went sky high with the libs spending like no tomorrow....

NJ didn't have a sales tax for a long time........


So taxes were a lot lower.....and of course, taxes on stuff was a lot less.....probably less on gas...and a lot less on phone bills .....

I remember when it went from 3c to 4c to mail a first class letter..and my mom talked of 'penny postcards' all her life....they were 2c and then 3c when I was a kid....and things got out of hand in the 60s with 5c stamps and up and up from there...
