Has America been fleecing authors for uncounted years by providing this service to people without any compensation to the books author other than the original purchase price.

The purpose of copyright is to encourage artistic expression and generally increase artistic works for the general public. The way it is done through the current copyright laws is through the concept of intellectual property in order to pay the creators of the works. However, bearing in mind what the primary purpose of the law is - an increase in culture for the public rather than cash for the creators - then libraries certainly fulfil this function.

Actually Ascalon - A library is not fleecing anyone. It has purchased copies of works for individuals of the public to borrow one at a time. A library has not merely purchased on copy of a work than mass-produced it to be given out freely willy-nilly.

Now you try using "willy-nilly" in a sentence.
